Community Garden Summer Update PDF Print E-mail

The community garden is looking wonderful! Please stop by sometime if you haven't got the chance. We are located behind the Pine River-Backus school near the football fields. Right now the produce is really starting to come in and it is keeping us all busy. Our only relief is that the rain has been relatively consistent so far this summer so we don't have to get out to our plots nearly as often. It seems the weeds are enjoying the rain as well so the battle continues.

The gardening classes are in full swing right now. They are open to the public and occur every other Thursday at 6:00pm throughout the summer at the community garden. You are more than welcome to join us. The gardening classes are funded by a grant from the Central Minnesota Regional Sustainable Partnerships and the Pine and Lake Country Local Foods work group in collaboration with the Region Five Development Commission. That means all our classes are completely FREE! So please join us for a new topic each class with great instructors. Find more details by viewing our previous post.

Food Task Force Summer Update PDF Print E-mail

What a glorious summer! And yet life seems to get continually busier. The food task force is on hold right now. With commitments stretching us all very thin we have decided that it was in the best interest of our projects to but them all on hold.

Reflecting back on our start in October and all that has been done in Pine River since then is very exciting. Many of the goals this group has set out to accomplish have come to fruition due to local shopkeepers and other community organizations. We now have a few different sources for healthy, organic, and natural foods in bulk and from local producers. Food education is continuing to be pursued through PRB Community Education classes and Happy Dancing Turtle classes.

This task force will continue to support all the efforts that have already been achieved and those in the future. The group is filled with very strong individuals who will continue to bring positive changes to the area in everything they do.
